Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The part-time Youth Instructor will be responsible for classroom instruction and providing hands-on experiences that include challenging and innovative concepts and experiences in learning, problem-solving, and analytical skills. The part-time Youth Instructor will simultaneously introduce youth (middle and/or high school-aged students) to one or more of six STEM-focused industry clusters selected as the summer camp focus area, as listed below in the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities section. This position will provide instruction focused on preparing youth for future high-skill, high-demand jobs.

This position is a temporary, part-time position for the duration of one Summer.

This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position from one academic year to the next is contingent upon continued grant funding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for academic instruction of course content for one or more of six STEM-focused industry clusters, in compliance with all LSC and accreditation curriculum guidelines. Creates engaging lessons that promote student involvement and application of the material.
  2. Collects information and submits required reports and forms in a timely manner (pre- and post-assessments, surveys, etc.)
  3. Conducts classroom activities such as hands-on laboratory, fieldwork or field trips focused on a broad array of experiential lessons to encourage students to apply STEM concepts to real-life problems, searching for solutions and sharing their findings into the fieldwork.
  4. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Expert knowledge in one or more of six industry clusters as selected for the focus for the summer camp:
    • advanced technologies and manufacturing
    • aerospace and defense,
    • biotechnology and life sciences,
    • information and computer technology (including coding),
    • petroleum refining and chemical produces and energy
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and the public.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service and providing a dynamic, safe climate for students

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the job; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment, as well as any special equipment generally used within the area of specialty
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office/classroom/lab environment with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in the industry sector selected as a focus for the summer camp, and at least 3 years of related STEM experience; an equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's Degree or Ph.D. in the selected industry sector with at least three years related experience
  • Experience instructing students (middle school and/or high school aged) in a STEM-focused summer camp environment
  • Training in safety procedures (e.g., laboratory, summer camp)
Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $35.97
