We are seeking an Ocean Engineer for APL's Ocean Systems and Engineering Group to lead high-performing teams of engineers in technology evaluations, prototype development, and in the fielding of pioneering maritime systems. You'll join a hardworking team of engineers who are leading the way in development of ocean engineering systems with our fleet. In this position you will provide technical and project leadership through the full engineering lifecycle to include concept generation, requirements development, fabrication, and installation of next generation systems on US Navy platforms. You would also support development of Navy integrated logistics support products (e.g., technical manuals, training materials) to support the end use of deployed systems with the fleet. We strive to foster an environment of creative collaboration to develop mission critical systems for our Navy customers.

As a Senior Ocean Engineer you will...

  • Apply innovative thinking and detailed engineering to the development, integration, and evaluation of submarine payloads, autonomous vehicles, acoustic systems, communications systems, and autonomy for our fleet.
  • Develop, implement, and test early prototype R&D maritime systems.
  • Lead engineering evaluations to apply R&D technology to urgent or emerging problems.
  • Lead white paper development, technology surveys, and drafting of technical findings and recommendations for our sponsors.
  • Support sponsor engagement and concept development for new start efforts.

Qualifications

You will meet our minimum qualification for the job if you...

  • Possess a B.S. in Ocean Engineering, System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or have equivalent work experience.
  • Have 7+ years of proven experience working on projects involving either industrial or military undersea operations, sensors, and systems.
  • Are passionate about ocean engineering and tools for maritime system development, integration, evaluations, and technology analysis.
  • Have experience in full lifecycle systems development including the development and fielding of maritime systems.
  • Are skilled in concept design, implementation, and testing.
  • Have demonstrated technical leadership, and the ability to mentor others.
  • Possess strong organization and planning skills, with record of accomplishment in a team environment.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and outstanding written and oral communications skills.
  • Have ability to take on leadership roles in a diverse environment of contractors, government, and Navy personnel.
  • Hold an active Top Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a MS or PhD degree in a technical or scientific discipline such as Ocean Engineering, System Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Have 10+ years of proven experience working on projects involving either industrial or military undersea operations, sensors, and systems.
  • Have experience as a principal investigator for science and technology efforts.
  • Have experience working in a highly technical research environment.
  • Have experience with maritime systems design and integration.
  • Have a current TS/SCI clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
