Days Off Typically Saturdays and Sundays, but working variable shifts, including nights and weekends, may be required. Current Assignment The Office of Infrastructure Delivery (OID) is recruiting to establish an eligibility list of candidates for vacancies that may occur within the next 12 months for the Structural Engineering team.
Incumbents in this position will receive assignments on a variety of ongoing projects, including planning, design, procurement, and engineering support during construction, operations, and maintenance of assets. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Reviewing design and construction plans, calculations, technical specifications, shop drawings and related documents for structural integrity and code compliance under limited supervision of senior staff
- Performing site visits to document field conditions, develop detailed drawings or sketches and prepare structural assessment reports of existing structures under minor supervision of senior staff
- Collaborating with the construction team to provide support for submittals and RFI review and coordinate with Engineer of Record for design approval, revision and changes under minor supervision of senior staff
- Assisting and coordinating with Maintenance personnel to provide day-to-day support including structures repair engineering and upgrades and asset management
- Documenting structural review activities in formal report technical memoranda, Bluebeam Studio sessions, and spreadsheet-based comment lists
- Establishing constructive and effective relationships with internal and external project team members, contractors, and customers to facilitate understanding and collaboration throughout all project phases
- Interdisciplinary partnership to improve quality and coordination of design
- Working during overnight and weekends
- Working in noisy and dirty environments or in foul weather and near moving trains
Ideal incumbents will demonstrate the following skills beyond the minimum qualifications:
- Must have design experience on a diverse array of building and non-building (facilities) projects
- Experience with California building design codes and material specific standards, including California Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC and NDS
- Experience with using design software for structural analysis (ETABS, RAM, SAP2000, SAFE, etc.), general collaboration software (i.e. BlueBeam Studio) and CAD and BIM software (e.g, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks etc)
- Excellent problem-solving ability
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to make clear presentations, produce concise technical reports
- Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
- Experience with dynamic numerical analysis and software preferred
- Experience with seismic design and analysis, assessment and retrofit of existing buildings (ASCE 41-17) preferred
- Interpreting and explaining District policies and procedures.

Examples of Duties

- Performs a variety of professional engineering duties related to the subject department. Duties may include preparing engineering specifications, preliminary cost estimates, engineering drawings, sketches, calculations and analyses.
- Prepares engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects; prepares and/or reviews the adequacy and accuracy of computations.
- Assists in the establishment of schedules and methods for providing engineering project oversight services; responsible for the verification of quantities of materials and adherence to specifications; may recommend resources to be allocated.
- Monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; evaluates proposed changes to approved plans and specifications.
- Recommends approval of and submits contractor's progress payment applications; performs audits of contractor and suppliers to ensure adherence to established policies procedures.
- Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on project matters including Inspector's Daily Reports, monthly and final completion reports, contract modifications negotiations, field and design engineering changes, and correspondence with the contractor on fulfillment of requirements.
- Discusses and coordinates engineering design or construction project activities with design engineering staff and other affected engineering personnel.
- Maintains awareness of progress on assigned engineering design or construction projects to ensure compliance with designated time and cost schedules.
- Provides assistance to inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction.
- Reviews construction design plans to evaluate potential construction problems; monitors construction project expenditures.
- Utilizes a variety of engineering programs and application including CADD.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering design and construction.
- Conducts field inspections; ensures compliance with specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience
Two (2) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable engineering design and construction project experience.
Substitution
Additional engineering experience as outlined above may be substituted for the above education on a year-for-year basis. A college degree is preferred.
